Food blogs 101: From domain names to building your brand

If you’ve got a passion for food, a desire to share your own recipes, an eye for beautiful photography or a love of eating, then starting a food blog might be right for you.

We’ve simplified the process into five easy steps so you can be on your way to blogging your latest food adventures in no time.

Name it

When deciding on a name for your blog, think about how your cooking style fits into a niche of the food world. What makes your content unique? Choose a name that is both descriptive and encapsulates all of the main content you plan to add to your blog. Brainstorm some keywords that describe your blog (a thesaurus is helpful!), then use those words to start a list of potential titles. Consider using humor or alliteration in your name. If you’re still stuck, you can use a name generator, such as wordoid.com, to give you some ideas.

Purchase a domain

Check the availability of potential site names on a domain name registrar, such as godaddy.com, domains.google, or wix.com. Domain names should be short and easy to remember. Keep in mind that ending your site name with “.com” makes it the easiest for readers to find and recall again and again. Once you’ve decided on an available site name, purchase the domain. Domain names can cost $15 or less per year.

Purchase a hosting package

A web hosting service will store your website and make it accessible on the web. Look for a shared hosting site (meaning you share a server with other websites) such as bluehost.com, hostgator.com, or justhost.com. A reliable web host costs $3 to $15 per month, depending on the options you choose when registering.

Install WordPress and choose a theme

WordPress is the most popular and effective blogging software. You can even host your blog directly from wordpress.com. Your web host will likely offer WordPress as a download, but you can also download it from wordpress.org. Best of all, it’s free! Next, you need to choose a theme that best works for your intended style of blogging. Look for one that instantly draws your attention — if it works for you, it is more likely to grab the eye of potential readers. The cost of a theme can range from free to hundreds of dollars, so chose wisely.

Set up Google tools and/or install WordPress plug-ins

Many tools offered by Google are free and can quickly and easily optimize your blog. Two great ones to start with are Google Analytics and Google Search Console. Also check out WordPress plug-ins that can improve your site’s performance. Plug-ins can be found in the sidebar of your WordPress dashboard. Some options include spam shields, Pinterest “pin it” buttons, “sharing” icons for visitors, and options to improve the speed of your site.

Now it’s time to start blogging.
