When I was pregnant with my first child, I thought a lot about different things like how wonderful it would be to be a mother; would my baby grow up to be a doctor or President of the United States; would my husband and I be good and understanding parents; and even would the baby keep us up all hours of the night.  One thing that I didn’t ponder was would I pee a little bit every time I sneezed, coughed, laughed too hard, or moved suddenly. SUI never crossed my mind.  SUI, not a new class of automobile, but a condition where your urethra weakens and you end up urinating a little bit, unexpectedly after certain activities – Stress Urinary Incontinence.  Thank God, the first time I experienced SUI I was at home.  It was triggered by a severe coughing spasm, something that happens to me a lot as I am a severe asthmatic with chronic bronchitis.  I was home alone so I could run and change my clothes and nobody knew but me.  I kind of blew it off thinking I had waited too long to go to the bathroom.  My doctor had recently prescribed a blood pressure medication that contained a diuretic and I was peeing more frequently so maybe that had something to do with it.  But it happened again that day when I was laughing at a funny story my husband was telling me, and I had just gone to the bathroom 15 minutes before so my bladder couldn’t have been full.  I hadn’t felt that urgent “I got to pee” sensation. Hmmmmm…….must be a urinary tract infection so off I went to the grocery store to grab  some cranberry juice and some panty liners (just in case)!
