It’s all about Cats and Dogs in our house this week, so we started off today with a classic dog-themed nursery rhyme. As I mentioned in my recent article about preparing a child for kindergarten , teachers suggest that reading nursery rhymes to your young children on a regular basis helps build the foundation for independent reading. Add on a color sorting game and your little one is learning all kinds of skills without even realizing it! This just seems like play to him.
I started by reading the boys the nursery rhyme, “Old Mother Hubbard.” For those of us who have forgotten the exact words, here it goes:
