  • 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1 large egg plus one egg yolk
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
