I’ve been using essential oils for over 8 years. We use them in the bath, in our laundry, on our skin, in the diffuser, and especially to clean our house. In the past two years I’ve made the switch to using ONLY doTERRA essential oils. Click here to read more about this journey.

I eliminated toxic chemicals and artificial scents over 10 years ago, when our son was born. The minute I learned about the toxins in cleaning products, I knew it was time to make a switch. This had a tremendous effect on all of us. My son and husband were prone to asthma, and I was allergic to scents. Our health improved immediately, thankfully.

I was shocked recently when I learned that the air inside the typical home is 200-500 percent more polluted than the air outside our homes, mainly due to household cleaning products.

Many conventional cleaners can either trigger or exacerbate allergies. The chemicals in household cleaners have the potential to cause short-term and long-term health problems, and children are more vulnerable to chemical exposure because certain chemicals may interfere with the development of their neurological, endocrine, and immune systems.

Think about it this way – you’re cleaning a kitchen counter and then 10 minutes later your kids are making a sandwich or a snack on that very surface. Now they’re not only inhaling toxic chemicals that have been sprayed into the air, they’re also ingesting residue from these cleaners that have been sprayed on the countertop.

Time to switch things up, right?

I have a magnet on my fridge that reads Try Organic Food…Or As Your Grandparents Called It, “Food”. We’ve been so good at raising awareness about the food we eat. I believe it’s time to raise awareness about the unnecessary toxic chemicals that we’re using to clean our homes. So try natural cleaning…or as your Grandparents called it, “Cleaning”.

Below I’ve included three recipes for you – these should get you started if you’re new to chemical-free cleaning. There are many more specific recipes for big jobs that need a little more elbow grease, but I think these three are essential and a great place to start for every day natural cleaning. These recipes will not only improve your health, they’ll also save you money!
