6 Tips for Managing Cold and Flu Season (Naturally)

Our oldest daughter came down with a fever over the holidays. She woke up completely fine, and then while we were on the road to a family Christmas celebration, she went down. Poor girl could barely keep her eyes open. After the 4 hour car trip she crashed in to the nearest bed.

Her fever lasted two days, and with it there was a mild cough. Other than the fatigue and the fever, the cough was her only cold symptom. Fast forward five days and I woke up with a cold and major aches. Slight fever too.

Aches, pains, fatigue, and a fever. Ugh.

If you or your kiddies are unlucky enough to get a cold or flu virus this season, here’s some tips for how to survive (and hopefully speed up healing time).

1. At the onset of any illness, eliminate dairy and refined sugar where possible.

Both culprits will worsen any inflammation in the body (i.e. those aches and pains), and they’ll feed the bug, encouraging it to stick around. Dairy is rough for colds because dairy actually increases mucous production. So if your cold or flu is particularly mucousy, you’ll definitely want to eliminate dairy until you’re all better. No one needs more mucous at a time when the Kleenex box or an inhaler has become your best friend.

2.  Use essential oils to cool the body.

I believe a fever is a good thing since it’s basically our body’s way of turning up the heat to kick out a bug; it is a sign of a healthy immune system. My husband and I don’t treat a fever at first sight; instead we monitor and try to bring the fever down naturally. This time we used diluted Peppermint essential oil to keep our daughter feeling cool when she was fevered (as well as the usual cold cloth and cold water). I also used the Peppermint oil when I came down with it, especially when it was time to sleep. I find fevers can lead to restless sleep at night so applying a little bit of doTerra’s diluted Peppermint essential oil worked wonders for me and my daughter.

3. Use essential oils to help keep everyone else healthy, and to help kick that bug out of your body (and even the air in your home).

We had the diffuser running non-stop. I diffused doTerra’s OnGuard blend and some Lemon essential oil to help keep everyone else healthy. If you’re really stuffed up, a great blend is doTerra’s Breathe/Easy Air blend, combined with some peppermint. It does wonders for your sinuses. I also made a roller bottle blend with coconut oil, Oregano, Melaluca (tea tree), Lemon, Peppermint, and OnGuard. I rubbed that on the bottom of everyone’s feet while I was sick (and on the back of the neck).

4. Make sure you’ve got good quality Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C in the house.

I always up everyone’s vitamin dose when we’ve got a bug running through the house. Here’s the vitamin brand we use and I recommend to my nutrition consulting clients.

5. Make yourself a homemade hot tonic (recipe below).

My dear friend knew I wasn’t feeling well so she dropped off a bottle of homemade hot tonic. It was heaven in a bottle. I’ve been drinking it daily since. I’m keeping this close by because I know it’s good for me this time of year, and I really enjoy it. It’s a perfect blend of warming winter spices. Make this tonic if you’re feeling unwell, or if you know someone who isn’t feeling well.

6. Last, you REALLY need rest to get over a cold or flu.

I was really surprised at how quickly I got over the worst of it. I have to attribute that to all of the above (numbers 1-5) since I had three kids home for Christmas break. There wasn’t much room for rest. That said, on day two I was super achy and tired so I forced myself to stay in bed for most of the day. The big kids chipped in with our toddler, and my husband came home early to cover me. Everyone else HAS to kick in if you want to get better. It’s not too much to ask for one or two days. Otherwise you’ll still be feeling crappy three weeks later. Listen to your body, skip the workouts for a couple of days, go to bed early, and REST!
