Planning Dessert with Friends

When Cate, Patsy, Joanne and I got together for our Blogger’s Thanksgiving, the dessert was plentiful. Turnovers and special apple bars and crumb cake and so much more. Despite being full from a delicious vegetarian side dish dinner, we all dug in. Big time.

There’s just something about dessert that really makes an occasion. Maybe it’s a dinner with friends, like our gathering was. Maybe it’s a holiday lunch with those special girls from college who helped you survive all the ups and downs. Maybe it’s an evening with an old and dear friend.


  • Have Ready To Eat Desserts – I don’t know about you, but when I have guests, I hate having to fuss with cutting and portioning. Instead, let guests do it for themselves by serving up already cut and portioned goodies like cupcakes, cookies and dessert shots. Serving will be a cinch, and you can focus on having fun with your friends — not getting the perfect cake slice for everyone.
  • Play Attention to Matters of Flavor – When it comes to flavor, the desserts should either all be themed — or totally not. For instance, you could have a chocolate-themed dessert table with shots in chocolate cups, mini chocolate cupcakes, brownies, etc, and that could be totally awesome. But if you aren’t going with a theme, then offer a variety — such as mini apple pies, sugar cookies, chocolate mousse dessert shots, etc.
  • Texture, Texture, Texture – Soft, crisp, dense, smooth, velvety — there are so many textures for desserts. Don’t limit your dessert offerings to just one. While an array of mousse’s might sound intriguing, that can be a lot of smooth and velvety if you don’t have some crisp to offset it. Just sayin’.
  • Let ‘em Help – The best way to ensure that there is something for everyone is to have your friends all bring a dessert. This kind of dessert pot-lucking also means that you end up with a great variety of choices too.
