What the heck is OMG SCitB, you might ask?
One of my new favourite things for 2013! Although I’ve had them before, but not often, I’ve found a good source for them, so I can now include them as part of my daily snack repertoire.
The OMG part you know. The SCitbB part is (insert drum roll here) Shelled Chestnuts in the Bag! And I could have included a YUM! in the title as well, because these babies are delicious! Nice and plump, with a texture like velvet. There’s something about them, when you take a bite, they’re so silky and smooth, a little sweet, a little crumbly. Not dried up, but lovely and moist. Ahhh, heaven. Plus they’re good for you. They’re one of the lowest fat nuts, 0.5 grams of fat per 50 fram serving. Compared to 50 grams of walnuts, which have almost 350 calories, 50 grams of chestnuts have about 120 calories. They’re high in fiber – about 4 mg of insoluble fiber for a 50 gram serving. They’re cholesterol free, have no sodium, and are a good source of vitamin C, B vitamins, folate, magnesium potassium, manganese and copper. One thing to watch out for though – chestnuts are high in carbohydrates. 26 grams in that 50 gram serving. Although they’re low on the glycemic index. I don’t eat a lot, maybe 4 at a time, because they make you feel fully satiated. You really don’t feel like you need to eat more that that. Another downside for me is that they’re not locally grown. But neither are the other nuts that I eat.
