Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Of course you can buy this stuff at the store, but why not try this Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe to make it yourself? That way you get the flavorings exactly the way you like it! Add this taco seasoning to your favorite recipes such as Spicy Roasted Chickpeas, Vegan Chicken Taquitos, and Easy Vegan Taco Cornbread Casserole.

My cousin was in town for our family reunion and we were tasked with bringing a dish to my sister’s house. It wasn’t a difficult recipe or anything, but I opened the cupboard and announced we needed to head to the store. I was out of taco seasoning.

My cousin did that cute, but obnoxious eye roll thing — the kind of things only cousins can do — and said to me that I should just make my own. I looked at her like she had an alien growing out of the side of her head. Why would I want to do that?

After listening to my cousin talk about the benefits of making your own taco seasoning (see below), I caved. Now I make my own taco seasoning all the time.

Hey! I may be stubborn, but I will also admit when I’m wrong.

Why You Should Make This Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

There are a lot of reasons to make your own homemade taco seasoning. Here are a few:

Making it homemade means you get to create the kinds of flavors you love in a taco seasoning. For example, Shawn’s not a big fan of too much cumin. I happen to love the stuff. So I make my own with a little less cumin and then sprinkle more on my dishes. We’re all happy that way!

Making my own taco seasoning means I know exactly what’s in and what’s NOT in my taco seasoning. Have you read the back of the taco seasoning packages? There can be a lot of ingredients. It’s disturbing. Leave out the preservatives and make it yourself!

No unnecessary trips to the store. I mean, if you like going up to the grocery store for one thing, by all means, go for it. But there’s a really good chance you have the ingredients to make your own taco seasoning right now in your cupboard. Save a trip and combine some spices. You might be like me and find out you love it!

When you’re doing a taco seasoning batch yourself you can make a lot! I love making a big container of it. I store it in a jar that used to hold jelly or jalapeños or something like that. Either way, it’s a much bigger container than those tiny packets sold at the store. I don’t want to mess around when it comes to my taco seasoning. I love that stuff!

You get to control the sodium content. I hate overly salty foods. In fact, I’ve bought seasoning spices before, from places like New Orleans, only to get it home and never use it because it was just too salty. I love making my own seasoning so I can get the flavors I want without all the salt!
