I stumbled across this week’s beer while creating my own six-pack at my favorite beer shop. I was drawn to the beer bottle’s label and it’s mysteriousness. Equally appealing was the beer’s name, Eliot Ness. We all know the story of Eliot Ness, right? Of Untouchables fame who brought down Al Capone. Did you also know he was Cleveland’s Director of Public Safety? Cleveland just so happens to be the home of Great Lakes Brewing Company – hence the name of this Monday’s selected brew.
I drank this Vienna Lager from a beer glass. Upon pouring, I noticed its deep, clear, rich amber color and white fluffy foam. The foam did not last long but there was lacing on the glass. This beer packed quite a punch. At 6.2 percent alcohol by volume I found myself feeling a little buzzed half-way through my glass. I also sensed a warming feeling in my stomach. Flavors were rich in orange, toffee and a little flowery. The aftertaste was almost medicinal and bitter, but quickly dissipated. It was a little strong for my taste.
