I am pretty sure most of you,Malayali's, would have seen this atleast once in their lifetime. Or am I wrong? If that's the case, you really have to try it. It really is delicious.Since I was brought up in the Malabar region of Kerala, this was a very common snack sent across by our Muslim friends and neigbours. It used to be the snack in my school friend's tiffin box.The later was slightly differen
There are some fruits that I like to eat and some in the form of drinks. Passionfruit is one such fruit. I liked it only in the juice form, until I baked these chubby pies. Daisy Mummy is our unlimited supplier for passion fruit juice. It's so tasty and addictive. This time when we reached India , we visited her and she sent us home with 2 big bottles full of it. Appans sister , my Mammaie, also ser
I don't usually care for the amount of eggs in a recipe I am about to try because I love eggs, especially hardboiled eggs. When I say hardboiled,it should be perfectly hardboiled. No rubber like yolks for me,please!Okay, now lets get back to the topic. Well,Kannur is not a place where you can get wonderful ingredients for baking.I know it,so Amma and myself stock up really well. But on how on earth wi
The past few weeks have been excitingly busy with baking classes, cake orders, friends and family calling by & me coming up with another original recipe for a cake.So in between these, I recieved an order for a cake for the newly married movie star,Samvritha Sunil. They wanted a layered chocolate cake with Vanilla buttercream, for the chocoholic star! She celebrated her birthday a day before her
I feel like it's been forever since I blogged about food.Ever since Ian Vaava came into our lives,I know I've neglected my blog.I think it's because he is a perfect entertainer that I forgot about things which entertained me before. So to make sure I don't lose touch, I organised a Baking Demonstration, here in Kannur. I spoke about it here and here and the feedback was awesome! The men
Last night as I put Ian vaava to sleep,I felt a sense of achievement.I was able to share something with you on my bloggie's birthday. Around 5 am this morning,I recieved a call from Jobin asking if we had shredded coconut at home. I wondered why and asked him the same.I don't remember what his answer was as I was very sleepy then. As usual when we spoke again this morning, the question popped in m
Hello everyone! It's been so long since we had a chat, right? Well, we are currently holidaying in Kannur and will be here for a while just like last time. Oh yeah! one more thing...my little bloggie just turned FOUR yesterday :-) So with my Babychoo in one hand & a 4 year old blog on the other, I've gathered some courage (again!) to conduct another baking demonstration this year as well! So if
Things have been super exciting at our end for the last 32 days, since our Ian vaava was born.Yes, he turned a month old today. He is a very good baby and doesn't give his Amma a tough time. Touchwood, the term 'sleepless nights' don't seem to work in our household. So Jobin is 'Appan' and I am 'Amma'. My Appan and Amma are 'Appu' & 'Ammu', short form of Appoppan & Ammooma.Jobin's mom will
Meet our new love, Baby Ian! Born on 22 July 2012.
I 've been away for a good amount of time, from blogging and I must say it did me some good. It gave my mind some rest and also ample time to set up our house for my parent's visit :-) Yes, they are visiting us right now so my contribution to this food blog would be minimal. Appan,Amma & Jobin asks me every now and then about the future of my food blog if I left it at Kadumanga. Jobin eve
Last Saturday, we were at our friends house for an early Onam Sadya. It was a potluck so we took some Pavakka Theeyal,Beetroot Kichadi,Puli Inji & Pal Payasam. There were a variety of other curries and the early Sadya was a big hit!The main thing that caught my attention was the Kadumanga achar that our friend made. It's so hard to find them in stores here so I thought I'd make some at home.It
There is a small tradition we had started between the two of us. Some of you might already know about it. It's a simple one,we bake each other's birthday cakes. Last year it was Real Tiramisu and the year before that it was Finnegan's Chocolate Cream Cake. This year was no different and I LOVE the fact that it's no different when it comes to our little tradition :-) A week before May 31 he starts a
May 30th 2012 marks the 30th year since my Appan & Amma got married and the least that I can do from here is to wish them many many many more together! :-)This cake is a blend of many that I've posted on the blog. It has a lining of Ladyfingers & layers of Simple Vanilla Sponge soaked with Simple Syrup which was filled with Mocha Bavarian Cream and
One thing that I've found common between Appan and Jobin is their liking for the candybar, Bounty. I completely, wholeheartedly hate it...so does Amma and forget about Ritchie boy! I have no idea how people can relish it.At the same time, I am a big fan of Lamingtons and I must say it's only because of Jobin that I've started liking them and now I like them so much that I wait for his birthday eve
Being the Kannur girl that I am, I have a few forever favourite Kannur curries. One of them is the Kannur meen curry which I've already blogged about. The other ones include Kootu curry,Varutharacha Kozhi curry & Varutharacha Sambar. I've made the latter two at home quite a few times but it's never ever lasted long enough for me to share it here. This time while I cooked the kootu curry,
Yes, you read it right! This little cake has 30 layers in it. 30 layers of soft melt-in-the-mouth French Crepes layered & coated with a nutella ganache. I came up with this idea after our trip to Vegas. We both kind of really really like Crepes, so why not make something with it for his Birthday! The number of layers has another implication to it, he just turned the big number!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY
It's that time of the year when you would catch me making Lamingtons secretly (even though he knows it!) once again. This is what he wants for his birthday every year because his mom used to make it specially for his birthdays while growing up and for Christmas. I follow the tradition but make it only for his birthday. Poor man, he actually waits to have a bite of this little chocolate coated
Last Thursday was a stressful day for me. I never get stressed that easily but when I do, I go crazy! I had to get out that stupid feeling and what else can bring my mood back other than Baking! I decided I shall bake something chocolate-y, something soft, something sweet and something yum. Didn't that sound like I should be baking a brownie? :-)So Chocolate Brownies, it was!I've had this recipe w
If only you could see me now! I cannot tell you how happy I am to have made this traditional snack at home. I am very excited because I've heard a lot of people saying that it's a palaharam/ traditional snack which is hard to find success in it's first attempt. I must say, I proved them all wrong. This was my very first attempt and I haven't stood next to anyone trying to learn it. All I had was m
We just got back from Las Vegas late last night . We walked and ate so much that I think everything found a balance by the end of the day. Everything was so tempting, especially the crepes they sold at the Caesers Palace! I gorged on their Nutella Crepes with some real good Vanilla Bean ice cream. We got a chance to eat some yummy gelato from Venetian too! All in all, it was a full filled trip.As
I have no words to tell you how much I love this dessert! This is just beyond awesome! A few ingredients when mixed together and baked can create such a wonderful smelling delicious soft dessert. Plus, it includes fruits too! You can make it with apples, pears, peaches, apricots, nectrarines, plums etc. I am not sure whether the tropical fruits would go well with it but there's no harm in trying f
So this must be the 100th time I'm talking about our Chicago trip. As you all know by now, we celebrated Easter in Chicago with Jobin's cousin and family. It was good fun.We both ate so much yummy homemade goodness for every single meal! It was like a seafood festival for me! There was seafood in every possible dish...I'm talking about the Malayali curries like Chemmenum Mangayum,Chomanna Meen Curr
I was supposed to remember that I was supposed to send some cupcakes with Jobin to work on Thursday, as he had signed up to bring a dessert for a potluck. He said he wanted something small that he could carry along with him on his way to office. Last time, I baked him these yummy Vanilla Cupcakes with Glossy Chocolate Frosting. This time he suggested Madeleines and I agreed to it 100% because I lo
This cookie is addictive!! You just cannot stop at one. If you think Potato chips are addictive, try one of these...I'm talking from my experience :-) Do I sound like a grandmother now? I baked these cookies to take with us to Chicago, to share with our family there. It was the first time I was baking something so thin, so light and so brittle. I don't think I would have handled anything so carefu
It's only a few months ago did I realise that people ate Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday. I thought it was for Maundy Thursday as we break bread at church and at home. I am not a big fan of the traditional unleavened passover bread I.N.R.I. appam/ Indriappam, we Catholics make in our homes (in Kerala) on Maundy Thursday. I was proved wrong when I tasted the Indriappams they served in our Cathed
Now a days, I'm trying to incorporate more fruits into my diet and end up picking quite a lot of fruits thinking they all would go into my belly in their raw state. It doesn't happen like that most of the time.No matter how much I try, I end up pairing them with flour, butter & sugar. This one was no exception. Everytime I opened my fridge, I would see the ripe plums sitting pretty in a bowl a
Last time, it was just the cake whereas this time, we hosted a baby shower on Saturday for a dear blog reader turned a very good friend of ours, R & R. It's really amazing how people get to know each other and how things turn out to be in a matter of a few months!! R & R are expecting their first baby GIRL in April and we are super duper excited to have hosted her baby shower and als
The weather is so good right now in Minneapolis. It's perfectly warm during the day and cool during night. The Spring has sprung all over and we are enjoying this beautiful weather before Summer hits here. We get extreme temperatures so we are really not sure which season are we actually looking forward to! Anyhow, when I decided to make this dessert, I thought of sticking to one of my current favo
I've been getting a lot of complaints these days from friends and family alike. It's just because I'm not posting any veggie recipes during this season of Lent. They said they are loosing their control seeing the Fried Chicken Kabab! So I posted a Lemon Yogurt Cake and the complaints increased because a lot of them have given up sugar for lent! :-) Some of them did try the Garam Masala Pulao but fo
Ibaked my very own cake, for the first time! When I say that, I mean, I didn't use anybody's recipe but my own proportions to bring it all together.Don't ask me how I got till there...it was a long bumpy ride on a very dull Thursday. Fortunately the end result was mind blowing that being sad the whole day didn't matter after all! All the thoughts, worries and confusions yielded in an awesome sauce
Is there anyone out here who hasn't tasted the Empire Restaurant's (Bangalore) Chicken Kababs? I'm sure there are plenty and all I can tell them is ' you are really missing out on some good stuff!'. This was my most ordered, favourite item of theirs.I could eat as much as they would give me but they never gave more than 5 or 6 pieces and since we were in our college days, we needed our pocket mone
Ihave a problem. A serious problem. If I see a photograph of something that I really like, I have to make it then and there...no matter what time it is :) What would happen otherwise? I would dream about it and wake up hungry, it's that simple :-) Have you all faced such stuff? I do, most of the time...therefore inorder to get a good night's sleep, I have to cook and eat it!This peanut chikki was o
Last Friday, I was so out of ideas for lunch and since he was coming home I had to make something solid ;-) We were out of veggies and since it's the Lent season, I try and avoid eating non-veg on Fridays. Therefore I was left with very little options, since cooking anything vegetarian keeps me thinking for hours as I feel I cannot do justice to it! There was a time when I feared making a pulao bu
The other day, I was on a call with our friend D and as always our talks led to the new dishes that we tried recently. She was very excited to tell me that her cousin S tried a new recipe for a naan and she told D about it and D was excited and tried that recipe for Butter Naan which came out really well. I was excited to hear about it because of all the recipes I have tried so far, none of
There was a time when I didn't know how to track the no. of visitors on my blog and there was a time I used to look forward to see that number increase. It gave me such joy that 1000's find my little bloggie useful in many ways! Most of you guys come here for recipes, some to ask me about crochet and other needlework and some of you just to read my 'stories' and take a peek at the photographs of wh
Afew years ago, while still in college,my friends and I moved in as paying guests to a nearby home. They provided us with all the facilities one could wish for, which for me, was a well lit kitchen! We made plans of cooking all our meals there and once in a while dining out or buying 'tiffins' from the neighbour Aunty. Little did we know what was in store for us :-)We cooked very very little and ate
Time sure flies! We both observe a moment of silence when we think of how fast the time flew by! It's just because we both still cannot believe it's been 2 full years! I am sure every single one of you, who are happily married, feels the same. It's been a year since I found out a way of doing that checkerboard cake without adding another set of baking tins into my already bursting drawer. It's been a
