Meatless in Seattle.

I eat meat. In fact I eat a lot of meat. I adore juicy chewy meaty goodness. I wasn't always a hot dog and cheeseburger loving fiend though. I had a good 12 year run of being totally meat free. Vegetarian to the core. When I was young and broke I would even sit through an entire service at the Krishna temple to eat free veggie food when that was pretty much the only place you could go and say the

Pork and Beans is Made from People!

After the apocalypse I assume I'll be eating a lot of beans. That and perhaps some human flesh but I don't want to get into that right now (just read the book The Road and you'll now what's what). When I was little I would just sit there and pop open a can of Beanie Weenies (grey looking hot dogs chopped up in saucy baked beans) and eat them cold out of the can. I liked to pretend I was vagabond t

Super Kawaii Food Fun Time Oishii Show!

Onigiri Rabbits and a Heart Filled with Smoked Salmon and Topped with FurikakeWhy so serious? Ya know, I subscribe to a lot of fancy food magazines and blogs and whatnot and the one thing that has always troubled me is the omnipresent snobby, richy rich snobbery (whether the writers are well off or not). Look I don't care if you sleep in a water bed filled with gold teeth and use thousand dollar b

Picky Pick.

I love little picky pick meals. Small bites of complimentary flavors. Salty, sweet, sour, bitter, hot, cold, crispy, silky all in one meal. It's a very "un-American" way to eat. No I don't mean that eating small plates makes you a red commie bastard, although they are great for sharing. I'm just saying that the folks around here (especially in the rebel flag, gun rack, can-o-soup casserole baking,

You're the best around! No one's ever gonna keep you down!

Hello there loyal readers and fellow food eaters. Well here we are. 2012 is becoming but a bitter, distant memory (or The Year of Suck as I prefer to call it) and we're still alive to talk about it. I'll be honest, last year ran me over and kicked me repeatedly while I was down laying down in a fetal position (not the face!!!). Bruised and broken I still crawl up to a near standing position with a

Swede Dreams.

Avocado and egg smørrebrød with hunters sausage and strawberries. Välsmakande! That's Swedish for tasty!I have a secret love affair with Sweden. Okay, I guess it's not a secret anymore. Sweet, supple Sweden with it's quiet demeanor and tender, juicy meatballs. Just thinking about it makes me want to rub butter all over myself and... Oh you're still here. Hmm Where was I? Soylent Greens.

Greens. I hated them as a child. I felt as if they were some alien torture device used to put the fear in children. I ate pretty much most things as a child including dog biscuits and rusty nails (long story) but greens made me unhappy. I didn't have the sort of mother that would make me sit at the table until I ate everything off my plate like some deranged dinner table prison guard. No, my mothe

One More Warning and You're Fired!

Once in a while the standards here at The Hunger drop below par. That's when the bigwig suits from corporate decide to make a surprise visit with clipboards and frowns in hand (they frown with their hands, it's very awkward). We all scramble to turn our "Eat ***** and Die" t-shirts inside out and switch The Cramps over to Peter, Paul, and Mary over on the ole' 8-track pod (or whatever the kids are

Pork bahn mi from Seattle Deli. Yum.Whenever you read one of those 'This city is known for this food' articles in whatever stuffy newspaper or rich people culture rag, Seattle always gets the ubiquitous salmon reference. We are known for salmon. That is all. Writers don't even need to visit to know what we're about. Salmon, Tom Douglas, Pike Place Market, Ride the Ducks. The end, consider my resea

Birthday Beef.

Ribeye au Poivre with Heirloom Sun Gold SaladSo a few weeks ago it was my cute lil' wife's birthday. She craved seafood but her special day landed on a Sunday and the idea of eating three to four day old fish was less than ideal. Nobody likes the taste of smelly old decaying flounder. Her next favorite thing; steak. A big juicy slab-o-meat. All dark and crusty on the outside and pink and juicy on

Tiny Spam Taco Bubbles

Okay, everybody knows I love Spam. And everybody knows I love tacos. Some people know that I love Filipino food. And Hawaiian food. So the logical thing for me to do was to make Filipino/Hawaiian inspired Spam tacos. It had to be done. There, sitting right in front of me. A shiny, slightly dented can of "luncheon meat" and a stack of fresh corn tortillas. Instantly a creepy but satisfying renditio

Pretty on the Inside.

I have a soft spot in heart for ugly food. Those brown, squishy dishes that are just so damn hard to make pretty. Some of the most tasty things are just ugly as hell and there's nothing you can do about it.  Even if you try to spruce it up by shoving it into ring molds or garnishing with a little sprig of fresh herbs it still ends up looking like lipstick on a pork chop. There's a saying the w

Cocktailin' - The Havana Sunset

What better way to forget your crappy job and unpaid medical bills than a delicious alcoholic beverage or three. Being sober is not nearly as fun as it was when you were a kid (unless you were a drunk kid). Wings and Radishes of Desire.

The bowl of pink shiny candy was dessert.Well, it's officially summertime (everywhere but Seattle). Truth be told, I'm not particularly fond of the big, hot ball of fire in the sky. No, I don't drink human blood but I do tend to be as pale as milk and skulk around in the shadows. Occasionally, I crave the sunlight even if it makes me sparkle (especially after I roll around in glitter, which I do d

There are a lot of cultures out there that seem to have a terrible reputation when it comes to bad, bland food. The British, the Irish, the southern half of Central America, Canada, Utah, the middle part of Africa, most of the former U.S.S.R., Australia, Hawaii, etc... I call bullshit. Every single culture has something delicious to offer. Just because you travel somewhere and have a bad meal does

My What Big Meatballs You Have.

As the late, great wordsmith Bon Scott of AC/DC once said "Some balls are held for charity. And some for fancy dress. But when they're held for pleasure. They're the balls that I like best." I'm not sure but I think he may have been talking about meatballs. I love a good meatball. Moist and succulent. Perfect when covered in sauce. Okay hmmm, how to escape the somewhat nasty images

Tater Tot Heaven

You know those days where everything just seems way too hard. You’re hungry but you’re also kinda broke so ordering pizza for the third night in a row just aint gonna happen. Cooking an elaborate meal is out of the question as well. Times like these I usually just end up eating a bag of taco flavored Doritos (even though they kind of smell like vomit) and then clutch my stomach in disgust for the

The Whole Enchilada.

I am a sucker for Mexican food. That includes the sauce covered, down and dirty stuff that was born in the states. You know, the deep fried ground meat concoctions swimming in pools of greasy orange cheese. I'm Strong to the Finish, Cause I Eats Me Spinach.

I remember asking my mother why Olive Oil never ate any spinach since she was the one always getting kidnapped by the big ugly guy. She had no answer for me. I myself didn't need Popeye and his spinach conspiracy to coerce me into eating spinach or anything for that matter. Hell, I'd eat dog biscuits if they were put in front of me. I was a five year old garbage disposal. The sheer volume of food

Bread Winner.

Fresh baked bread is an elusive trick that a lot of chef's cannot grasp. I too thought that I needed to make a blood pact with a demon or perhaps perform black magic human sacrifices to pull it off. Pastry is not my forté. Pastry chefs and "regular" chefs are not built from the same cloth. Most pastry chefs were raised in loving environments that encouraged learning math skills for fun. I am a soft boiled egg slut. I love them and I will kill to have them in my mouth. Okay, perhaps that's an exaggeration but I really do love them. Nobody does soft boiled eggs as well as the French.  Maybe it's the French chickens (or le poulet as they like to be called). Who knows. What I do know is that I also make a mean soft boiled egg. Not to brag (okay, I am) or anything

The Keys To Having A Bad-Assed Pantry: Part 1 - Spices

Are you one of those people who complain about how expensive it is to cook for themselves?  Or perhaps you have a friend who says that all the time.  I say to you (or your sad, hungry friend), that's nonsense!  The problem is this beginner cook.  You don't have a stocked pantry.  If you have the basic supplies the times you got the itch to cook it wouldn't cost very much (

Pork Chop Express.

The pork chop has a really bad reputation.  Often cooked to death until all that is left is a burnt dry mouthful of sawdust. Dry pork is disgusting but it's not the pork chops fault.  It's the human that thinks it's okay to commit chuleta de cerdo asesinato (pork chop murder).  Look, as long as you're not buying your meat from a shady back alley pork vendor (or grocery store factory

The Bird is the Word.

Stuffing meat into different kinds of meat is an American tradition.  Take an ordinary lil' chicken breast for example.  You can slice an opening in the side of a nice piece of chicken breast and stuff it with virtually anything and it will be delicious.  Well maybe not anything.  Bubblegum or soap are two things that I would not recommend stuffing into chicken but anything yum

A Barrel Full of Crackers.

If you're from the South, chances are you've been to Cracker Barrel.  Part old-timey candy store, part country cookin' restaurant.  I used to go nuts when my folks would take the family out to some far away, middle of nowhere Cracker Barrel.  They always seemed to be nestled right next to an outlet mall or a seedy truck stop.  The second you walk in the door you're transported

Pork N' Beans.

When I was a kid I used to love the pork and beans that came in a can.  A congealed mess of mushy beans and unnaturally pink "pork" chunks.  I was a pretty disgusting child.  I'd eat anything.  I loved the mystery food that came from cans.  I'm sure I already have my entire lifetime supply of sodium.  It's terrible but I still have cravings for the over salted, proces

A Fancy Pork Belly Breakfast.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.  Breakfast is my favorite meal.  I mean sure I am not a morning person so I tend to eat breakfast a little later than most.  To me, there is nothing better than sausage, bacon, eggs, biscuits, grits, and ham.  Throw a little cream gravy over the whole thing and I'm in Cracker Barrel heaven.  However let's get something straight, I am

Fall Cleaning

It's that time of year again where the The Hunger cleans out it's closet and gives you her hand me downs.  No these aren't defective recipes or scraps from the trash.  This are a collection of amazingly delicious dishes that weren't quite pretty enough to get a full blown photo spread.  You know, kinda like the fourth place winner of an Oklahoman beauty pageant.  Pretty, but pe

The Keys To Having A Bad-Assed Pantry: Part 3 - Sauces & Condiments

Okay, by now your pantry should be spicy via The Keys To Having A Bad-Assed Pantry: Part 1 - Spices and lubed up via The Keys To Having A Bad-Assed Pantry: Part 2 - Oils & Vinegars. Now we're going to move on to the sticky, saucy, and chunky stuff. It's no secret that I am a hot sauce junkie. I pretty much add it to most of the things I cook. I love the little hint of sour from the
