I will admit that I am not a fan of stove top oatmeal. The Mr. has tried to make it a handful of times and every time I eat as much as I can but ultimately end up dumping it in the trash. It just never seems to taste like the instant stuff that comes in those convenient pouches. *Mega apples & cinnamon fan here* But this morning I woke up craving oatmeal and my instant stuff was all gone.
Over the weekend I went on a cleaning spree and during that cleaning spree I realized that I have way too many food magazines. It seems like every time a subscription goes on sale, I'm right there subscribing. So in order to make room for my growing collection, I've decided to get rid of some of my magazines. I've made a lot of great recipes from these magazines for instanceZesty Sausage PenneCrea
This is actually the second time that I've made this dish. The first time I tried it with tilapia and that's when I found out that I don't like tilapia. So I decided to try the recipe again but with sea bass. I recently discovered that I like sea bass when I made the sea bass with honeyed apples. This reminds me a lot of coconut shrimp. I wasn't overly sure when I was adding horseradish into
No I have not lost my mind. Let me explain. It was all Pinterest's fault! But to be honest, it's all thanks to Pinterest that I came across this recipe from Monique's blog, Ambitious Kitchen. Monique is a kitchen Goddess for coming up with these brownies. Brownies are my #1 weakness. They're right up there with puppies and kittens. There is nothing that will tempt me more than a batch of brownies.
We all have at least one recipe that reminds us of our childhood. That one recipe that we remember eating ever since we were itty bitty kids. Well, today I'm sharing one of my childhood favorites with you. My Grandpa DeCoursey would always make this hamberg soup and it was probably one of the only soups I actually liked. I don't know why but I've never been a huge soup eater. However, this is alwa
I always like to try something new every year for St. Patrick's Day. This year the Mr. came home with a ton (okay, more like 4 boxes) of Girl Scout cookies. I still have 3 boxes of Thin Mint still in the freezer from last year. So since it's darn near impossible to eat just 2 cookies, which is the serving size for Thin Mints, I decided to turn it into an adult version of the Shamrock Shake using t
I've gone my entire life without knowing the joy of chicken and waffles. I've seen it on menus and every time I thought... "nope, that's just too weird". Well, I'm happy to announce that I've finally popped my chicken and waffle cherry and have become obsessed with the duo. It all started when the Mr. came home one day and told me how he ordered chicken and waffles for lunch. I immediately s
Very rarely does the commissary here sell tuna steaks but when they have them, we buy them. Even though I'm not a huge fan of the fish, the Mr. loves it. So when he came home one day with some fresh tuna I quickly hopped on the internet to look up a quick and easy recipe that didn't require an overnight marinade.I did end up trying a bite and I will be honest that I sort of wished I'd have made a
Woohoo! It's that time of year again which means I have a fun snack for our four legged kids! This year I've managed to obtain a dog who's owner didn't want him anymore. She literally said that about her dog when I tried to find out where his home was. So home with me he went in hopes that I could find him a forever home. However, it doesn't appear that he is going anywhere anytime soon and I must
When I was younger, I remember helping my mom and dad roll the balls every year around the holidays. My father's co-workers and friends looked forward to the holidays because it meant that my dad would bring in his famous rum balls. As a kid I just thought that everyone liked them because they were cookies rolled in powdered sugar... now I know better. This recipe packs a wallop of a punch because
I was given the opportunity to try VidaCup thanks to Ashley over at MommyGuru. VidaCup makes instant coffee, tea and energy drinks that are great for those of us on the go. Below are my personal thoughts on the products. Ageless Brew"Imagine a coffee that helps you look and feel rejuvenated. Okay I know that I've been on a soup kick lately but I have been cruising through Soup of the Day (Williams-Sonoma): 365 Recipes for Every Day of the Year by Kate McMillan and so far I've loved every recipe. Plus it's finally feeling like winter here in the desert. It's been in the 50's and it's pretty gloomy out, so I've been in a soup mood. This recipe was a surprise for both the Mr. and myself.
Another great recipe from Soup of the Day (Williams-Sonoma): 365 Recipes for Every Day of the Year by Kate McMillan. This recipe peaked my interest with just the name alone. I've never had a fried egg in my soup. It sounded so strange to me that I just had to give it a try. Both the Mr. and I were pleasantly surprised when we took a bite and found that it was actually a good combination of flavors
When Nescafe Memento first came out, the company offered a chance to try the instant coffee for free. Me being the type that drinks coffee on pretty much a daily basis decided to give it a shot. Not too long after, I received samples of the Nescafe Memento in Mocha and Caramel Latte in the mail. I will admit that I'm not a huge fan of instant coffee. So keep that in mind when reading my reviews.&n
With the temperatures starting to go down here I decided to try out a bunch of soup/stew recipes from a book called Soup of the Day (Williams-Sonoma): 365 Recipes for Every Day of the Year by Kate McMillan. I was lucky enough to get a copy of the book for review and this was the first recipe I tried from the book. I made soup just about every day for a week straight and all the recipes were delici
Right before my birthday I got an email from Averill from Cabot Creamery. I've made it no secret that Cabot is the household favorite here. I'll use your every day brand of cheese for pizzas and what not, but when I want to sit down and eat a good cheese with crackers, Cabot is the only option for us. Now I've been known to use their cheese in recipes like the Spicy & Smoky Mac & Cheese&nb
I really wish I had some amazing photos of this to show you guys because it was amazing! I'm not a huge fish person but after a recent trip where I spent $30 on a salmon dish because I was unsure of the other fish on the menu, I've started experimenting. The commissary had sea bass and of course being me, I grabbed it, went home and then started searching up recipes. Since I'm not a big fish

If you follow me on Facebook, then you probably saw the post that I was one of 5,000 people who won the chance to get a sneak peak at Kettle Brand's Limited Batch potato chips in celebration of their 30th birthday. They brought back 4 flavors that they had previously been retired and after tasting them... I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why they retired them in the first place. They could
Let me just start out by saying that I think this is my favorite egg dish. Which is strange since I don't like eggs. There's just something about the taste of them lately that's really been throwing me off. Maybe it's the heat of the desert or maybe I just grew out of eggs? But for some reason when I came across this recipe on The Family Kitchen, I quickly bookmarked it so that I could make it. An
Sometimes a recipe sneaks up on you that makes you think, "How did I not think of that myself?" This is such a recipe. I came across it while cruisin' pinterest and knew I had to have it... like immediately. So I went in the kitchen and got to work whipping up this delicious cold, frothy drink. Which in my opinion could outdo one of those fancy $4 coffee drinks any day. This recipe comes from Sarah
I know I've been missing for a while and the posts keep getting fewer and fewer but I think I've hit a blogging rut. With working and the desert heat, dinners have been a mix of grilled burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and any sort of quick throw together last minute meal, I've just been uninspired to cook. However, every once in a while I plan a slow cooker meal, which is where this one comes from. We
I try not to make brownies to often since I could easily eat an entire batch in one sitting and not feel any guilt. I think the last time I had brownies was years ago. It is by far my favorite thing to eat. I mean, what's not to love? It's baked fudgey chocolatey goodness... who could resist that?!I was at work talking to one of my friends and all of a sudden out of the blue I blurt out "I want br
Who doesn't love chips? They are so versatile that you can do virtually anything with them. You can add them into casseroles, make nacho's, chips and dip, I've even had potato chips in chocolate chip cookies before! The only thing about chips are... they aren't that good for you. Which is why I absolutely love Beanfields bean and rice chips! These chips areGluten-freeCorn freeFarmed and made in t
I came across this recipe from Reeni over at Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice . I personally LOVE falafels. If I could eat them every day, I would. It's not like I grew up on this stuff either. I bet if I went to my parents house and made them falafels... 1) my father would refuse to eat it, saying that he doesn't eat anything he can't pronounce, and would make a burger instead 2) my niece w
I love curry foods. I usually always have some form of curry in the house at all times. Although, the Mr. doesn't love curry he will eat it. This recipe comes from Miriam Barton's Meatless Meals for Meat Eaters cookbook. I liked the combination of vegetables in this dish. It has yams, bell peppers, broccoli and cabbage all mixed in a coconut curry sauce. And it was extremely easy and fast t
I was asked to review Miriam Barton's Meatless Meals for Meat Eaters cookbook and this was one of the recipes that immediately caught my eye. I love beans and I cook them all the time adding spices to them as they cook for flavor. So when I saw this recipe had onions, lime juice, cilantro and a bunch of other great flavors mixed into the beans, I knew that I would love this recipe.I did soak the b
I love Asian cuisine. The Mr. and I don't go out to eat all that often so unless I can talk him into ordering Chinese food, I'm usually stuck making it myself. The other day I had taken out calamari rings from the freezer but wasn't exactly sure what to make with it. I was searching on the internet for a recipe when I saw one for pineapple calamari which peeked my interest. The only problem wa

I know I am breaking away from the norm here but I've decided to add kitchen product reviews to HCR. We've all done this, spent hours searching the internet for an honest review and I once even asked you guys for help while looking for kitchen gadgets. So I figured why not review the new kitchen items that I buy? So without further ado I present to you one of my new favorite kitchen additions.I bo
Now that Spring is upon us it is starting to get rather toasty here in the desert. We've already hit the 90's (f) and that is considered comfortable. Well, not so much for me, I'm still just a girl from New York and I have a feeling that no matter how long I live here I will never get used to the insane heat. Luckily it hasn't been staying in the 90's and it seems to keep dropping back down into t

I have a new addiction and that is Pinterest. I love the visual you get with the pictures, you can find a ton of recipes on there and you can create your own categories. So much better than the "favorites" section on my web browser. So now I do most of my recipe browsing on pinterst. Which just so happens to be where I found this beauty. I mean, come on, spinach pizza crust? What a marvelous idea!
There used to be this little cafe here in town that served these delicious sandwiches that consisted croissant, turkey, cranberries and brie cheese. Every time I went there I always got this sandwich, there was never any question about it. I was loyal to my sandwich. So what does one do when they can no longer go out and order their favorite sandwich? You make your own of course! Now I know that I

I hate it when something so delicious looks the total opposite in pictures. Oh well, what can you do, you'll just have to take my word for it. So even though this may not look very appetizing, just note that it is insanely good! (It's even better the next day when you eat the leftovers.) I saw this recipe on the Betty Crocker website and since I am a curry fan, decided to give it a try. It had gre
Ever have one of those days where you wait until the very last minute to figure out what to make for dinner? I do it all the time and usually end up eating hamburgers or leftovers for dinner. Except last week I was lucky enough to have everything on hand for this recipe from Betty Crocker. Well... almost everything at least.I did change some things from the original recipe below starting with the
I LOVE stuffed peppers but with it being just the Mr. and I, making stuffed peppers is a whole lot of work for just two people. Not to mention that there is no such thing as making just 2 stuffed peppers, the filling you make could stuff a grocery store worth of peppers. So... what does one do when cooking for two? ALAS, I have the solution for you! (okay if you don't know what it is yet, then you
I know that this a food blog but when I was approached to do another review/giveaway by a company called My Memories, I looked at their digital scrapbooking software and I knew that a lot of you guys would be interested in this. But first I need to get this off of my chest... I do not scrapbook. I tried it once, about 7 years ago and I got as far as three pages before I finally called it quits. I
When this time of year rolls around, everyone is all hyped up over the Super Bowl. I never grew up in a sports family and thankfully I only had to deal with football on Thanksgiving when my uncles would take over the T.V. Truth be told, I am just not that into football and I don't really understand any of it, except for you aim to get the ball on the other side of the field. So it comes to no shoc

You know how you should never go to the grocery store when you are hungry because you will end up buying everything... well sometimes that isn't such a bad thing. This time it worked out well in my favor. I never buy tortellini and when I came home one day with two packages of the stuff, I started to look for dinners to incorporate them in. I wound up finding this recipe over at Betty Crocker and
BOOOO!Yeah, I know, it has been a while. Trust me, there is a reason why I have been MIA for a while. If you follow me on Facebook than you know that the Mr. and I hitched a ride on a few planes from CA-NY to see family and friends for New Years. Have you ever tried to see everyone and do everything within 5 days when you have been gone for nearly 2 years? It isn't easy. When we were home we final
Every year on Christmas Eve I would make this french toast casserole before heading out to my aunt's house for the annual family holiday get together. That way, the next morning when we all watch my niece open up her gifts from Santa, I can throw the casserole in the oven and by the time she's done, the casserole's done. It really does time out perfectly and I found that it is a lot more enjoyable
I know everyone makes gingerbread cookies for the holidays. It seems like gingerbread and Christmas go hand in hand. So why not spruce up your typical holiday drink and add a little gingerbread flair to your hot cocoa? I came across this recipe last year and instantly fell in love. It isn't that hard to make but you do have to have patience to allow the marshmallows to fully set before you cut int
With the temperatures finally getting below 60 here in the desert, I am making more winter friendly recipes. One of which was Joanne's amazing pot pie. The recipes she comes out with are amazing and I am pretty sure that unlike myself she has taken food photography classes because her pictures make you drool on your keyboard without even realizing it. So, no surprise here that when I saw this reci
I had this soup a couple of years ago while out with a bunch of friends for lunch. The soup of the day was cream of spinach and even know I am not a fan of "cream of anything" soup I decided to give it a shot. I ended up devouring mine in record timing and probably would have gone up for seconds if it wouldn't have made me look like a total pig. Now that it is finally cooling down here in the dese
I received an email the other day from Chef Jeff who is the author of the cookbook DinneRevolution. The cookbook contains over 200 healthy recipes that have 10 ingredients or less. I like that it has a wide selection of poultry, beef, pork, seafood, vegetarian and side dish recipes. The ingredients are easy to find in your local grocery store and the directions are easy to follow. There is also th
I am still new to Indian cuisine but I love changing up our menu every once in a while. I found this recipe over at Living Free and decided to give it a try. I am always looking for new vegetarian dishes to try and this one was definitely not anything I have had before. It's a mock paneer because the cheese is substituted with tofu. There are also different variety of vegetables in this recipe tha
