I love rhubarb, but I don't get it too often, so I almost always make my very favorite Rhubarb Custard Pie when I acquire some. When I saw some beautifully red rhubarb at the Farmers' Market on Saturday, I bought a bunch and swore to myself that I would try new things with it. I haven't made lemon bars before, and these looked like a fun spin on them, so I decided to give them a go. Plus, they wer
I got some asparagus from the Farmers' Market on Saturday morning, and when I saw this recipe pop up in my feed reader, I knew it was the one I wanted to make. I love that the sauce is a tomato-y twist on pasta carbonara - with egg making it beautifully rich and creamy. Continue Reading →
Every year, we plant a small garden on our patio. We have room for a few tomato plants and some herbs. The weather finally cooperated long enough for me to get everything planted Monday morning. I forgot to plant garlic over the fall, so we don't have any of that this year, but here's what we do have: Continue Reading →
One of our best friends brought us a bottle of Zubrówka from Poland a while back (complete with the coolest bottle packaging ever!), and we've been drinking it occasionally the way they showed us - over ice mixed with some apple juice. It's such a unique flavor, and it's really smooth. Plus, any drink with a name this fun has got to be good, right? Continue Reading →
We had some friends over for dinner, and we figured it was a great time to fire up the grill! I picked up some beautiful grass-fed ground beef from the Farmers' Market on Saturday, and we made the tastiest burgers ever! We kept it super simple - forming quarter-pound burgers and seasoning them simply with just a sprinkle of sea salt on top right before they hit the grill. Continue Reading →
I found some super ripe mangoes and avocados at the store today, and I knew they'd be perfect for a lunchtime smoothie. I (of course) had some kale in the fridge, too. I like adding a bit of frozen fruit instead of just ice to bring it all together. Continue Reading →
A sneak peek at what’s coming up on Big Flavors from a Tiny Kitchen. Continue Reading →
I love beet chips. They're nice and sweet and crispy, and when baked, they're pretty healthy, too. I remembered that I had a few beets buried in my fridge, and I thought that making chips would be the perfect way to use them up. Continue Reading →
I've been trying to incorporate more raw food into our diet. It's especially tempting now that the weather is starting to warm up. The thought of preparing a meal without heating up the kitchen is very enticing. I find that a lot of raw recipes are smoothies and salads, but I wanted to look into doing more substantial. I've stumbled upon several really inspiring raw food websites, and this soup re
I really loaded up at my local Farmers' Market this week, and I have a super ambitious menu plan to try to make sure I utilize all of these goodies! Continue Reading →
Dino usually cooks breakfast on weekends, but he had to work all day/night Saturday, so I figured I'd make breakfast for everyone. I had been eyeing this breakfast casserole for a while, and I had some shredded mozzarella on hand, so I got myself adequately caffeinated and got to work in the kitchen. Continue Reading →
This recipe had been on my menu for a few weeks, but I wasn't able to find frozen pearl onions that weren't already in a sauce. And peeling pearl onions is one of those tasks in the kitchen that I really do not enjoy at all. So I had finally taken them off of my grocery list, when I found myself in the frozen vegetable aisle getting ingredients for Iron-Skillet Succotash, and a bag of frozen pearl
Before I came across this recipe, I had never even entertained the idea of making seafood in the slow cooker. It never crossed my mind. I was skeptical... but I just had to try it out. I'm so glad I did! This turned out fantastically! This is sweet and spicy and super tasty. The salmon flaked apart as easily as if I had cooked it in the oven. Continue Reading →
My toddler and I were headed to a monthly potluck, and I needed something quick and easy to bring to contribute. I remembered this recipe - it's one of the ones that always disappears at our Superbowl parties, and it's very easy to put together. It sounds like a weird combination of ingredients, but trust me... it's wonderful! Continue Reading →
I have a bunch of the awesome Cashew Cream leftover, so I picked up some fresh blueberries, mixed them with the cream and sprinkled some ground cardamom over top. It was a delicious and healthy dessert! This would be great for breakfast, too. Continue Reading →
I had some chili sauce leftover from when I made Slow-Cooker Beef Short Ribs last week. I reached out to some friends to see if anyone had suggestions for using a partial bottle, and one of them told me that she had taken chili sauce, soy sauce and apricot jam and poured it over shrimp and cooked it all together for dinner one night for an Asian spin on shrimp. I thought that sounded awesome, and
Back when I was pregnant, we started a Mother's Day tradition where my husband and father-in-law make crepes for me and my mother-in-law. It's great, and we don't have to do any of the cleanup! This year, we had it for dinner over at their house. They forgot the Nutella, but they made bacon, so I think we'll forgive them ;) Continue Reading →
We had some of the Iron-Skillet Succotash leftover from last night's Supper Club, and I had an idea to use up the leftovers - frittata! And since today is Mother's Day, Dino said he'd make it. Woohoo!! Continue Reading →
Our other contribution to this month's Supper Club dinner was dessert. I had suggested making a Mississippi mud pie, but Dino wanted to find something that we had never had before. He tracked down this recipe and made the entire thing by himself this morning. It turned out to be a really superb pie! It was kind of like a lemon chess pie - nice and rich and custard-y. It was a big hit! Continue Rea
This month's Supper Club theme was Southern, and I had a feeling it might be a heavy meal, so I set out to find a light(ish) recipe to contribute. I've never made succotash, and I got it in my head that I wanted to try it out. This recipe is really easy - it just takes a bit of time to chop all the veggies. Continue Reading →
Have you ever had a rich, indulgent dessert that was actually healthy? What about one that was rich and creamy but didn't have any dairy? When I saw this recipe over at Chocolate Covered Katie, I was in awe. Could it really be that good? Had I stumbled across a way for my lactose intolerant husband to enjoy something rich and creamy without guilt? This stuff is amazing. Continue Reading →
I had picked up a beautiful piece of grass-fed beef short ribs from the Farmers' Market a few weeks ago, and wanted to make something simple with it. So I found this recipe and thawed them out. This recipe took a bit of prep beforehand, which I usually try to avoid when I'm using the slow cooker, but this time around it seemed necessary. This turned out to be a superb meal! WOW! The flavor was nic
In an attempt to make a few smoothies that aren't full of kale and avocados, I put this one together today. After a really long day yesterday, I decided that a nice chunk of ginger would give me a good kick. So I raided the fridge and put this smoothie together. Since I wasn't using avocado, I threw in some raw cashews for a bit of protein, and to bulk it up a bit. Continue Reading →
Homemade bread is hard to beat, but it can be a lot of work. This bread is great, and it's pretty low-maintenance. I haven't made it for a few years, and I was happy to make another batch for my friends. This dough can sit in the fridge up to 7 days, so you can let it hang out and just grab a chunk of dough whenever you want to make a loaf. It goes perfectly with beef stew, and is great plain or t
I wanted to bring some dessert to my friend and her husband, too, so I looked through my favorite cookie recipes and remembered how awesome this one was. It's bright and lemony, and is sure to brighten anyone's day (or any time in the middle of the night, as is the case for a lot of new parents). The powdered sugar-coating kind of bakes into these, so I dusted them with a little more after they we
Some friends of mine recently had a beautiful baby girl, and I was excited to find out that they was ready for a visit. Being a new parent tends to be a time full of takeout, pre-packaged food, or skipping meals altogether for a lot of people. I remember when we had our son, there were a few friends that very generously brought us homemade meals, and it was beyond wonderful. So I wanted to do the
Oatmeal is such a nice, comforting way to start the day. I love steel-cut oats, but they take some time to prepare. I also enjoy regular oats, but they can be a little... meh. I mean, once you've had a bowl of beautiful, chewy steel-cut oatmeal, it's kind of hard to go back. So when I saw this recipe that called for a 50/50 mix of both types of oats, I was immediately interested. Continue Reading
This week, I'm trying to use up some of the items in my freezer... you know, to make room for more frozen goodies. Ha! When I buy pork tenderloin at the store, it usually comes in a 2 pound package that has 2 pieces of pork inside. I like using one and freezing the other. A lot of times, pork doesn't reheat too well (it tends to get dried out in my experience), so I don't like cooking 2 pounds at
I wanted to make a quick salad for lunch today, so I put this together with some of the produce that I had on hand. I mixed some halved sweet yellow tomatoes, chopped avocado and cucumber, thinly sliced yellow onion in a bowl. I drizzled some good quality extra-virgin olive oil and my favorite Fig Balsamic Vinegar on top, sprinkled on some sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper and topped it wi
Today's smoothie is full of antioxidants, vitamins and lots of tasty fruits and veggies. I really enjoyed this combination of flavors. This purple powerhouse is a naturally sweet, raw vegan treat. Continue Reading →
I made this cookie dough on Star Wars Day, but didn't end up getting around to actually baking them until Cinco de Mayo. So... May the Fifth Be With You. These cookies are nice and crispy, and the apricot filling goes really well with the spiced cookies. Continue Reading →
It's been a while since I made myself a smoothie, so I picked up a bunch of kale from the store and decided to make a smoothie with some of the fruit that I had on hand. For some reason, I feel compelled to add kale to 99% of my smoothies. It's a really great way to bulk them up and add some wonderful nutrients. This one was nice and refreshing, and my toddler seriously loved it, too. Bonus! Conti
Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, here's a roundup of some of our favorite Mexican recipes. I hope you enjoy these dishes as much as we do! And if you're looking for something to quench your thirst, check out these tequila recipes over at The Domestic Mixologist! What's on your menu for Cinco de Mayo? Continue Reading →
Looking for something that you can make a big batch of to keep in the fridge for a picky toddler? This stuff has been on heavy rotation in my house lately. Buttered pasta has always been the perfect comfort food for me - simple, tasty and inexpensive. Continue Reading →
I think I may have a new favorite dessert/breakfast/snack... this fantastic (and pretty healthy!) Persian Pudding from Alejandro Ramos over at Always Order Dessert. Wow. Just wow. This was super simple to put together, and it hits all the best sweet, salty, crunchy, creamy notes. Continue Reading →
I had some corn tortillas left from when I made Tequila-Lime Shrimp Tacos, so I figured I'd whip up some more tacos for dinner. I always keep chicken in the freezer, so I figured I'd poach said chicken and shred it, throw some spices on it and make tacos two nights in a row. We're on a Cinco de Mayo roll here, people! My Tequila-Lime Shrimp Tacos were the featured post on FoodBlogs today. Awesome!! I think a celebratory margarita is in order... Continue Reading →
Stop what you're doing and make this salad. Oh. My. Goodness. Let me warn you - this recipe needs a total of 1 hour of sitting time. I didn't realize that when I set out to make it, and I was super annoyed. I get cranky when I'm hungry, what can I say? But let me tell you, it is SO worth it. This salad has so many things that I love in it, and it's cool and refreshing and perfect for the warm weat
To go with my Tequila-Lime Shrimp Tacos, I made up a quick corn sauté. I figured I might as well throw some tequila in there, too. You know, to make it a cohesive meal ;). This was really easy to put together and had really nice flavor. It was great with the tacos, and I was able to use up some produce that I had hanging out for aaaaalmost too long, which is always a bonus. It's tricky to cut back
I'm pretty proud of myself right now. I managed to get a Cinco de Mayo recipe made and am actually posting it a few days early. It's even a recipe that I made up myself. Wow! I love cooking for holidays, but usually do it on the actual holiday and then don't end up posting it until a day or three later. Not that that's a bad thing, but I realize that some people like to see something new from me i
I wanted to make something relatively quick for dinner tonight. This recipe looked promising - a quick marinade in a spiced yogurt, then throw it on the grill. It was easy and definitely fit the bill for tonight. Continue Reading →
I'm finally getting the hang of making brownies from scratch. The last batch I made (Starbucks Espresso Brownies) were great. They were the first brownies that I made without a box mix that we really enjoyed. So when the chocolate craving hit after dinner, I looked for a simple brownie recipe to remedy the situation. This recipe stood out to me because it said "one-bowl", which is a big bonus for
I made a nice, quick raw salad for lunch today to use up some of the veggies that I had in the house. I juiced half a lime in the bottom of a bowl, added a pinch of sea salt and some freshly cracked black pepper, and then whisked in a stream of a really nice extra-virgin olive oil. I dropped in some sliced radishes, chopped tomato, cucumber, and parsley and tossed to combine. It was nice and fresh
This is a super simple weeknight meal that turned out great! The only change I made was to use a little olive oil in the pan with the green beans. I love solid recipes like this that only call for a few ingredients and pack a lot of flavor. Of course, we really enjoy garlic, so I had a feeling this would hit the spot :) Continue Reading →
This recipe is incredibly simple - and only requires 2 ingredients! I had some tilapia in the freezer, and some pesto leftover from when I made Basil-Scented Oat and Tomato Soup, so I had everything on hand to make this. I couldn't believe how much flavor this had! It was really tender and flaky and delicious. Continue Reading →
I don't use my mandoline too often, but when it comes to a dish like this, it makes the job much easier to handle. Consistently shaped slices will cook evenly, which is definitely what you want here. Continue Reading →
