Have your Challah and eat it too

Lately, I have been posting quite a bit about bread, haven’t I? What can I do when I have an artisanal bakery in the neighbourhood?! I had written about The Baker’s Dozen earlier in TimeOut Mumbai as well as posted about it on the blog. The bakery has now added another bread to its basket – the Jewish Challah. Challah is braided, egg bread, traditionally eaten on Shabbat, the Jewish rest day. Shab

5 Travel Books to Treasure

I recently read this article on Conde Nast Traveller’s website (one of my favourite online travel resources) on books that inspire you to travel. The article listed 16 books, ranging across diverse locations such as Istanbul, Ho Chi Minh, Marrakech, Alaska, Ireland, and my very own Mumbai (Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers). The UK’s Telegraph has also come up with its own list of the

Mamagoto - Bandra's New Pan-Asian Restaurant

Mamagoto – what a fun word! And fun is what this newly-opened restaurant is all about. Mamagoto apparently means “to play with food”, and the chefs here have experimented with classic pan-Asian dishes & techniques to come up with inventive cooking. The Delhi-based chain recently opened two outposts in Mumbai – one at Bandra (where else?) and the other at Ghatkopar (R City Mall). The restaurant

Eternal Sunshine of the Lemon Kind

Lemon Curd is the closest that we have to sunshine in a jar, don’t you think? It’s sweet and tart and adds a delicious zing to many desserts. Layer it in a cake or top your breakfast pancakes with it. Or serve it along with scones for a variation on the English Cream Tea. Fill up little tart shells with it or use it as an éclair filling. Or simply slather it on toast! It’s such a versatile spread

Thai Sticky Rice

Moving away from my usual Italian recipes and cake recipes, I thought I’d post something different this week. I have never really cooked much of Thai food, though I do love eating it. Coconut milk is a big component of Thai cuisine and I just love the way it lends itself to both sweet and savoury dishes, giving them a rich creaminess and at the same time not losing the coconut-y flavour. This recip

Your Daily Bread

Bread (or the lack of it) was one of the causes of the French Revolution, with the infamous quote attributed to Marie Antoinette going down in history – “let them eat cake”. But it is bread that’s undergoing a revolution of sorts in Mumbai, with the ubiquitous sliced bread being replaced by a variety of artisanal breads. I had written earlier (here on the blog) about the new boulangerie in town. A

Summer Salads with a Twist

White shirts and pastels, iced teas and ice creams, hats, scarves and shades, the koel singing you awake every morning – what’s not to love about summer? Plus it’s mango season! Not to mention, a time for a summer holiday for many... While it’s still spring in a large part of the northern hemisphere, the Indian summer is already making its presence felt. All I want to do is stay in the confines of

David Lebovitz’s Apple Spice Cake

I haven’t posted a recipe in a while and I thought I'd remedy that today. So fancy baking a cake this Easter weekend? I tried this Apple Spice Cake using one of David Lebovitz’s recipes for a recent potluck dinner & it was a hit. David Lebovitz is a Paris-based pastry chef and writer. I have been following his blog and I really love his writing style, not to mention the tantalising photog

An Exclusive Interview with Rahul Akerkar

With the increasing worldwide focus on food, it's no surprise that restaurants and restaurateurs from India are making their presence felt - whether it's bringing cuisine from various parts of India to a global audience or putting their unique spin on world cuisine. The recently released S. Pellegrino Asia's 50 Best Restaurants List has no less than 7 restaurants from India. And coming in at numbe

Chez Moi – Opening soon in Andheri

I wonder why is it that Mumbai hasn’t taken too kindly to French restaurants, as much as it has opened its arms to theItalian ones (or what passes for Italian, in many cases). Almost every new restaurant goes for the Italian tag, or a more generic ‘European’ (case in point Cheval and The Sassy Spoon). I wonder if it’s the perception that French food uses a lot of butter. But if you’d go behind the

The Baker's Dozen & Pain Perdu

Pain Perdu literally translates from the French into ‘lost bread’! But this post is about how I’ve recently found some authentic, artisanal bread, right here in Mumbai. And about time too... So without further ado, here’s The Baker’s Dozen; because all you “knead is love” (OK, sorry about the Beatles pun, but you should really blame The Big Bhookad  and his #BhookadPuns for that). Also, a rec

David Rocco’s Dolce Vita at ITC Grand Central

Couple of days ago my phone rang and it was ITC Grand Central asking if I’d like to attend an evening of wine tasting with Canadian-Italian TV Chef David Rocco. After I was done swooning a bit, I promptly agreed! Who would pass up an opportunity to meet a hot-shot TV presenter of the very popular food and lifestyle programme David Rocco’s Dolce Vita? A bit of France in Mumbai at Suzette – includes Signature Recipe!

Bonjour! This is a slightly long one since it’s packed with a review, a class and a recipe. Remember the Hot Chocolate post I did earlier this month? (Incidentally, it got featured in Los Angeles Times – Food!) I had written about Suzette, the French Creperie & Cafe in Mumbai, which does the best hot chocolate in town. And as promised, here is a more detailed post about one of my favourite caf

Hot Chocolate

Do those words make you go weak in the knees as they do to me? I have no idea what triggered off my ‘choco-holism’, but there it is. Put any type of chocolate in front of me (with the exception of mint flavoured ones and Bounty) and that’s the last of it that you shall see! And I rejoiced when I recently read that the Belgian Post Office will be issuing five stamps that smell and taste of chocolat

Amritsar’s Food Trail – Part 2

Amritsar’s Food Trail – Part 1

To continue with the series of food/travel posts from my recent big fat vacation... I had been eating my way around Kumaon and Amritsar and in my earlier post I had written about some of the traditional Kumaoni dishes. So this one is dedicated to Amritsar... And do I have a lot to share! In fact, I’m splitting this post into two. I was in Amritsar for three days and quite frankly that’s not enough

Food from the Mountains of Kumaon

Yes, I am still holidaying in Uttarakhand! So far, I have visited Binsar, Kausani, Ranikhet and of course, Almora, which is my base for this trip. Next stop, Nainital and thereafter Amritsar! In my earlier post, I had published a photo-essay on the colourful market of Ranikhet. In this one, I’ll focus on the food of the Kumaon region, known as pahadi food (or food from the mountains). Riot of Colours in Ranikhet – A Photo-Essay

I am currently holidaying in the mountains of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand and I spent the weekend in Ranikhet (literally, the Queen’s meadow). And it lives up to its name! Located in the district of Almora, Ranikhet is a picturesque military cantonment town. The meadows of Ranikhet are surrounded by soaring pine and oak forests and afford a panoramic view of the Himalayas (when there is no cl

Yes, I'm on a holiday, but that doesn't mean my blog will not be updated! Here is another Italian-inspired dish for you to try. I say “inspired” because the recipe that follows is not how Bruschetta is traditionally made in Italy. Bruschetta is an antipasto, which literally means before the meal. Antipasti form the first course of a traditional Italian meal and are equivalent to entrees or st
