This past weekend while shopping at an estate sale I found a vintage meat cleaver buried behind a bookshelf that had at least 100 pairs of shoes lined up perfectly.. Instantly draw by the allure of a pair of vintage pumps.. I discovered a box of the most interesting items you could possible find snuggled together… a well- worn meat cleaver..and atleast 40 vintage amber apothecary bottle
That was just as good as it looks... if not better…But before we get into the recipe, lets talk about cookbooks shall we… I’ve mentioned a few times my adoration of cookbooks… although my taste are more toward the older (vintage you could say) cookbooks, there is an array of cooking books on my shelf from those that I consider cookbook masterpieces.. to the more (as I like to call them) cooking pi
Ever make something… and think about how good it would be mixed in with say potatoes.. No..ok Well the other day I made some hot crab dip that I make all the time and never really thought about how well it would be if turned into a dish for dinner.. but this same day I was pressed for time.. (which seems like everyday) and there were 5 faces looking back at me wondering what was for dinner..I had
When life gets busy, complicated, overwhelming… I try to find a place to clear my thoughts and ease my mind… My grandmother used to work for hours in her garden and on the beautiful roses bushes that surrounded one side of her house.. It wasn’t until I was older that she told me “Its my place… its where I sit and talk to Jesus and give him all my troubles..” she would say the soil
Confession of a southern girl… It’s extremely difficult to for me to keep up with things… I am one of those people that takes on way more than they should.. Hence the somewhat distance space between post.. I’m trying to do better about this.. Truly… but seems like, as soon as I pull out the flour, eggs and check the camera …someone calls me with some issue, event, happening, catastrophe
What do you do when you’re upset or stressed? Me, well I eat… I’ve often tried to swim against the tide of this thing called stress eating.. only to fail miserably and allow the tidal wave of sugar, ice cream, fried chicken, and butter to wash me away.. Nothing wipes away the fragments of a bad day like dipping your fried chicken leg in a bowl of ice cream covered in chocolate syrup.Hey… do
A great deal of situations can be solved with ham and cheese..Say for instance… ….. breakfast.. lunch.. dinner..As a kid, a ham and cheese sandwich was made daily for me... as my after school snack. My grandmother made it using pimento cheese and tomato, lettuce and juicy leftover baked ham. My mom went down the road of Oscar Meyer ham, that square yellow cheese encased in the coolest plast
I have a confession to make.. I really.. really don’t like to fly Which is somewhat crazy because I have to travel via the friendly skies.. a lot.. ..It's way too often that I find myself walking down that enclosed claustrophobic like tunnel to board some Delta flight.Don't get me wrong..it's not the actual flying part.. just the take off, landing and jittery bits in between… As t
Here in the south there is no shortage of Pecan Pie recipes.. Leading to its availability at just about anywhere.. Like the food section in the Quick Trip by my house. Although, there is something about gas station pie that screams… DON’T DO IT…But boiled peanuts, now that’s different.. of course you can eat those out of that dingy jar that’s probably been there all week.. It’s ok really..Like I
At one point in my life, I was an endless cloud of sadness.. There were just… things..going on that didn’t seem to ever get better. So I did what most people would do.. I found an outlet to drown my sorrows in. They were beautiful, dark, and just simply perfection....it wasn’t until after several weeks that I realized how bad they were for me.... and that maybe they weren't helping
With the convenience of the every growing mega super markets, more of us tend to move away from those very hard to find butcher shops. As a product of a family that raised pigs and chickens, this is a somewhat difficult concept for me to accept. Mainly because growing up my uncle could tell you what that pig (or chicken) ate from the time it took its 1st breathe to the day before it hit your table
In the post for these muffins, I expressed my deep love of poppy seeds..Well, I also have a somewhat deeper love of pistachios An even bigger love of muffins.. I also really love Navy School boy Blazers and Polka-DotsJ Crew Now there is no confusions as to what to get me for Christmas..There is also no confusion as to where the inspiration
About 3 years ago I started collecting vintage cookbooks to feed my hunger of “classic recipes” .. It’s intriguing.. the difference between cooking in early 1900’s and now. I even have one book from the late 1800’s.. which I just got and was a tad bit expensive but I’m an impulsive shopper and throw all reason out the window when I see something I want. Just ask American Express.. The
Have you ever tried Sun Gold Cherry Tomatoes..? My daughter calls them yellow grapes… They have a beautiful golden color similar to sunshine and make just about any dish light up from their brightness. One of my closest friends is a farmer.. and on his farmer you can find these golden jewels nestled in lushes green plants. There are also heirloom tomatoes and goat named Ellie who is slightly temper
Are you one of those people obsessed with reusable grocery bags? Yea… ok good… What if you get to the store.. park your car only to realize that you have forgotten your bags.. do you turn around and go home and get them? No.. ok.. I guess I am the only one on that train.. let me make a note to talk to my therapist about that …I do my best to remember my bags due to my somewhat dependency issues. A
My grandmother was a walking-talking hand book of the rules and regulations of proper etiquette.Don’t slouch, elbows off the table, sit with your legs crossed….As a child my life mission was to defy every single rule…Many years ago, well before we all became digitally dependent upon location and status updates and actually interacted with one another face to face. My grandmother and I we
There is nothing like a simple old fashioned southern recipe. They don't need to be dressed up with what Granny would call "These New Fancy Ingredients". Southern classics are the best when cooked with the same ingredients (or close to the same) as your grandma and her mama before that. One of my all time favorites is Spoon Bread. Some might confuse this with cornbread, they might even tell y
Fresh salsa is one of my favorite things to make this time of year.. It’s a great “Look what I brought to your party.. Don’t I rock” type dish. Mainly because it can be dressed up in all kinds of drippings from black beans, grilled corn, avocados, watermelons, strawberries.. You want me to keep going or are ya with me.. CoolSalsa is prefect to eat with chips while sipping on that corona
Hola I’ve been slighty MIA.. I know.. Been traveling alittle.. eating a lot and enjoying this warm weather..But back to business….Atlanta GA is where I currently call home. That is... until I move to the French country side and purchase that Lavender farm that I’ve always dreamed of. I will probably live in Georgia for a very long time.Anyway, this post isn’t about demographic locations

Ever been to a watermelon seed spittin… yea “spittin” contest?No... Then you’re missing out..There is an art to the whole process.. with the end goal being that you get your seed way past the other contenders on that plastic like covering or just past the line on the floor..I know you're thinking it’s disgusting.. but actually.. It’s entertaining.. To see a bunch of grown folks standing around wat
How do you feel about Grits? Is that a weird question?No.. really I want to know before I lead you down this path we are headed which is a post about my love for Grits.. I need us all to be on the same page.. When I first started pondering on the idea of a food blog, a friend of mine asked me not to it make only about grits, fried chicken or cornbread.. which I indulge in on a frequent basis... So
Hi there folks..Hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day, mine was too short... I Think.Seems like Tuesday and that dreadful beeping noise that comes from my alarm clock promptly at 6am, rolled around way too fast.It is Tuesday right?Anyway, the other day when I made these cookies, I had some leftover rosemary that I wasn't quite sure what to do with. When I got up the next morning there was a not
There is a lot to be said about a love that is timeless, that touches your soul and makes you whole again. The deep sigh of relief you expel knowing that you have found someone you can forever hold on to.Well.. I feel this way about cookies..preferable shortbread cookies. I developed this love because they were my Granny's favorites.. she could make them into anything. From classic circles to star
A letter…Dear people that live in my house, I think there are 3 (not including me). So can one of you explain why the laundry room makes me think there maybe 12 people living here?Every weekend I look at all the mountains of clothes thrown across the laundry room floor and wonder who the heck is wearing all this stuff. !!It makes me go to the maid to ask if she has a solution only to realize that
Today I was day dreaming...This happens often... normally when I'm at work facing an extreme deadline with people breathing down my neck... like that is going to really get me to move any faster.. in the words of my 11 year old..As If...Sorry.. I got off track..I was day dreaming.... about all the places I'd rather be... thinking about this amazing tomato and corn casserole like pasta dish a

Tres Leches Cake at that...This cake is one of my favorites. It's moist milky flavor taste even better when topped with Dulce De Leche Frosting, so I added that too...This is a somewhat short post because... well....I want to celebrate too...and si
Today was like any other day, except I bought pork chops at the market instead of chicken.I'm somewhat a creature of habit...One of my biggest habits is that I always gravitate towards the chicken section. Even when my daughter is walking behind me asking.."Is there anything else other than chicken?"Oftentimes I have to stop myself from saying "no" or "yes, but the steaks just don't look good toda
When I returned to work after my Granny's passing, I was greeted by warm smiles, words of encouragement and even a few hugs. There are just no words to describe the array of emotions that I felt from all the love that I received. Towards the end of the day, I was given a large manilla envelope that I opened once I got home. It contained cards and letters from my colleagues expressing their heartfe
I may be in need of your assistance. There is a party later on this evening and I was supposed to bring dessert.... for some reason my mind went to chocolate and then cocoa, butter and well you see where I'm going. The end result is I have this big bowl of brownie batter....Brownies.. for an adult partySee... I think I'm losing my edge...After 200+ PTA luncheons and classroom parties , well I'm not
Interesting title huh? The garage door on our house is broken... Well, it's going through something would be a better description of the situation. Something that causes it to be indecisive when it comes to opening and closing. At first I thought someone was playing a trick on me, until after repetitive attempts to close the door and it getting almost there...only to go back up again... did I real
How do I say goodbye to a woman that meant the world to me?From a little girl holding on to the hemline of her skirt until an adult wishing I could still sit on her lap.Granny you loved me unconditionally, never giving up hope when everyone else did.I remember your words..."As long as I'm praying for you, then God is on your side Erika and you don't need anybody else to believe in you more then hi
Recently my daughter was accepted into a robotics program at school... It's cool... I'm proud..very proud actually, but my daughter told me that sometimes I embarrass her.... so I won't go crazy shouting about how wonderful she is from the rooftops.. like I normally do... mainly because I haven't quite recovered my voice from before. The classes teach about "putting things together and makin
Music makes me happy.Often times I listen to music while I'm cooking.. Gets me goingThere is a large variety of music in my playlist, but when cooking it must be fast paced, head shakin, booty groovin music... Something like David Guetta. If you haven't heard of him, go to iTunes and download his music to your iphone, ipad, ipod, ithink Apple has way too many products. By track #2..
Spicy 70's GrannyGranny always wore lipstick.. I used to stand in the bathroom doorway as she would meticulously apply the plum-raisin hue, with hope to one day wear lipstick too. Once while watching, she started applying a new reddish color.. I remember asking her why she was wearing that color today. “You know Sweet Pea, sometimes it’s ok to be a little spicy.. “ You think the same applies
Recently, in the office where I work there has been ongoing “improvements” to better the work environment. One was the removal of paper towels and the addition of a hand dryer in the ladies restroom.Look, I’m all for Save a Tree- Save the World. But I have a disorder that requires me to use a paper towel in order to open the bathroom door. So imagine my dilemma (and subsequent breakdown) when I go
When I was 6 years old I received the esteemed honor of attending my first sleepover.I was... in short..over the moon. One because I was invited to a party when Anna Wright (my arch enemy in the 1st grade) was not, two because I was going to do everything that my mama would object to and she wasn't going to be there to stop me.The morning after the sleepover, my friend's mother informed us that sh
I was in a baking mood when I made my Cinnamon Butter Biscuits the other day and there were a ton of bananas that were sitting around being left uneaten because the people in my house run away from healthy food.I decided to keep the momentum going and try this recipe I'd seen for banana bread. It came out tasty but sorta crumbly...which meant that I had to use syrup when I ate it..you know to hold
This past weekend the weather was so nice... me and the family hung out at the park and on Sunday just me and the kiddos went for a walk. It was on this walk that I realize just how fast time flies. My daughter was telling me all about the latest 5th grade gossip and the GRAND end of the year party that she was planning. (Which I have yet to be invited too... and wonder how she plans to pay for) A
Dear Sweet Man Of Mine… Can you please decide which way you want to lock the door each day and keep it that way? I ask because… it’s difficult to come home and take out my keys and unlock the bottom lock-push the door- only to find that unsuccessful-then unlock the top lock and try again- all the while carrying a car seat, my bag and other stuff I probably don’t need but have anyway. It wouldn’t b
My Granny was well know for her Cakes and Pies, one of her most famous was her Pound Cake. She made this often...so much so that I can almost remember all the ingredients that she put in it....Almost...The cake was golden, moist, and delicious...it was also the only recipe that she did NOT give me. So over the years I have tried many recipes trying to recreate the famous pound cake she use to
